How Are Goji Berries Cultivated In Tanaduk Botanical Institute in Tibet?
Tanaduk Botanical Institute in Tibet conducted a study on forty one varieties of Lycium species and identified one as the Lycium chinensis/tibeticum or the Tibetan Goji berries. Due to the outstanding health benefits of Goji Berries these were considered worth conserving and are now extensively cultivated. The institute has asked the Tibetan lamas and other local researchers to collaborate and carry out a research activities on Goji berries. First the genetic make up of the identified Goji berry species is formulated and an appropriate cultivation method is designed by replicating the precise natural growth conditions needed for Goji berries. These grow mainly in the secluded hillsides and valleys of Himalaya where the conditions are extremely hot and extremely cold. Also the soil must be fertile and alkaline- rich.

A farmers’ cooperative was also organized by the institute to teach them ‘wildcrafting technique’ which is a special cultivation method used there for growing Goji berries. The institute also arranged for an international outlet to share the various health benefits of Goji berries discovered by them and also discuss the advantages of various health fruits. Through it also raised funds to support other conservation programs of Himalayan medicinal plants.
